My Favorite Hockey Romance Author: Elle Kennedy
When you think of the best hockey romance books, it is almost impossible to not think about Elle Kennedy. She truly is the hockey romance queen! From the Off-Campus Series, Briar U Series, and Campus Diaries series, she is sure to not disappoint!
I simply devour every book she writes and am excited to continue reading her books for years and years to come! I am so happy I was able to find her and her books on Kindle Unlimited back in 2019. I hope you enjoy reading her books as much as I do!
What is Hockey Romance?
Hockey romance is a sub-genre of the sports romance genre. The plots of this genre typically revolve around the fast-paced world of professional and/or amateur college hockey.
They tend to feature hockey players as the main characters or love interests, showcasing their passion for the sport both on and off the ice. The dynamic and competitive nature of hockey serves as the perfect backdrop for the romantic relationships that develop between the characters.
Whether it’s a forbidden romance, a second chance, a fake relationship, or falling in love with rival players, hockey romance novels capture not only the thrill of hockey and the friendships that arise but also the excitement of falling in love.
Why are Hockey Romance Books So Popular?
It feels like hockey romance books just started to gain more popularity over the past 3-4 years. In fact, I only picked up my first hockey romance, The Deal by Elle Kennedy, back in 2021, but I have been actively enjoying this genre ever since.
I think it has become so popular because college and professional hockey players have always been more of a mystery to women, especially in the United States, as they are kind of hidden behind the more popular sports of basketball and football. Now, with the rise of the hockey romance genre, I feel like they are finally getting the spotlight they deserve. Women are even becoming hockey fans and attending professional hockey games to watch the hockey teams live! Books bringing unlikely groups of people together is such an awesome thing to see!
Also, Kindle Unlimited, Booktok, Bookstagram, and Booktube have all been able to provide a lot of exposure to these indie authors who are typically the ones behind the hockey romance novels, even getting enough attention to get signed to a traditional publisher deal and put into bookstores. It is always so heartwarming to see!
I am looking forward to reading a whole lot more hockey romance books in the future as the genre continues to gain even more popularity as the years go on!
Why Do People Like Hockey Romance?
If you have never read a sports romance book before, you may be asking yourself, Why do people even like reading about hockey romance? Why is there so much hype around this sports genre of books? I can guarantee you, that once you read one really good hockey romance, you will never ask this question again.
But, honestly, one of the main reasons I personally like hockey romance is actually not the romance, but the heavy emphasis on the male friendships. I find it refreshing, as it is something we typically do not get to experience in other contemporary romance books.
I love getting to know the rest of the team and their POVs, especially if it is a series that follows different characters per book.
So, if you were ever hesitant about picking up a hockey romance book, I hope you give them a chance!

Popular Hockey Romance Tropes
When it comes to the best hockey romance books, these are just some of the typical tropes you can expect to see:
- College Hockey
- Professional Hockey Player
- Fake Relationship
- Brother’s Best Friend
- Second Chance
Fake Relationship
The fake dating trope is one of the most popular sports romance tropes there is, and it is for good reason! I am a sucker for a fake relationship and watching the main character’s love story unfold while “pretending” it is all fake. Even though I know exactly what is going to happen every time, it never gets old to me!
Brother’s Best Friend
Another popular trope in this genre is brother’s best friend. This trope is a classic for a reason, is there anything better than when the main female character falls for the forbidden romance with her brother’s best friend?
The build-up of the relationship between the main female character and her brother’s best friend often creates a tension-filled storyline that keeps the readers captivated from start to finish. The forbidden nature of the romance with the addition of a hockey team dynamic adds an extra layer of drama to the plot, making it an even more addictive read.
Second Chance
Hockey can be an intense sport and a lot of emotions can run high, especially with time spent in the penalty box.
This can end up with the main characters having a broken heart and leading to a second chance romance. And let’s face it, we all love it when the male main character grovels at their feet to forgive them (unless it was just a miscommunication😅).
Dive into the World of Hockey Romance!
If this is your first time reading a hockey romance book, you are in for the ride of your lifetime! I do have to warn you, these books are beyond addicting, and you are almost guaranteed to become a hockey fan after reading them!
At least if you or your boyfriend/husband wants to go to a hockey game in the future, you will at least know the fundamentals of how the game is played, and if nothing else you could find a new favorite college or NHL player to cheer on.
So, get ready to fall in love with the thrilling world of hockey romance and the main character’s moments on and off the ice rink!
