I was ecstatic to see one of my favorite clean beauty brands at Sephora, Kosas, launching a new mineral sunscreen, the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen SPF 40. I was lucky enough to purchase the sunscreen a day early through the Sephora app, so I have been wearing the Kosas DreamBean sunscreen consistently for the past 3 days and cannot wait to share my review!
What is Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen?
According to Kosas, DreamBeam Mineral Sunscreen is a natural, non-toxic sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. It is a lightweight, non-greasy formula that is gentle on the skin and suitable for all skin types. This sunscreen is made with clean ingredients to nourish and protect the skin and is also free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Even though it is not fully waterproof, Kosas has performed tests to confirm its ability to be water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. It can be worn alone or as a makeup primer or base.
Yuka app rating: 90/100
Key Ingredients of Kosas Sunscreen
- Non-nano Zinc Oxide: A Physical Blocker and Reef-Safe
- Ceramides: Helps with skin suppleness
- Peptides: Helps to improve skin firmness, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and increase skin hydration
- Hyaluronic Acid: Helps to hydrate the skin, improve its texture and appearance, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Allantoin: Helps to soothe, hydrate, and promote skin cell regeneration
The Application
I was a little worried at first because it came out of the tube slightly darker than my skin tone, but it ended up adjusting once applied to my face and neck. I did not see any issues with oxidizing or significant differences in my skin tone due to the pinky-peach hues that neutralize the zinc oxide’s natural white color.
I applied it 5-10 minutes after my morning skincare routine, right after my moisturizer dried down. If I was wearing makeup over it, I waited an extra 10-15 minutes before applying my serum foundation on top of it to let it fully dry down. I had zero pilling, and it honestly looked flawless underneath my makeup.
You can see in the video below how the actual sunscreen product looks when applied to the hand:
Coverage
Even though Kosas claims it is not a tinted sunscreen, I would say it still works to even out any redness on your skin. I have been leaning more towards lighter serum foundations and found this provided just enough coverage to be satisfied not wearing makeup on top of it.
Smell
The smell is so pleasant for how amazing the ingredients are! Especially for being a sunscreen, it still smells natural but clean. It works great for sensitive skin since it is free of synthetic fragrances.
How it Wears
When first applied, the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen leaves a stunning glow on the face. It feels very hydrating without turning greasy, which can be very hard to find in mineral sunscreens. I also had absolutely zero white cast due to the pinky-peach hues they added to neutralize the white cast of the zinc oxide. When wearing the Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen, I found all I needed was a little blush, and it completed my whole look for the day!
Throughout the day, the glowiness started to mellow out and look even more natural. However, the hydration was still there at the end of the day. I did not feel any extra dryness or irritation, even after wearing it for 8-11 hours a day. It also did not leave any sticky or noticeable feeling on my face, which is very important for me when it comes to sunscreen. It felt comfortable enough to wear all day.
Also, I typically know the day after I apply a new sunscreen if it will break me out or not, and I am happy to state that it has not broken me out at all.
Since it is only April and I live in the Midwest, I was not able to put it to a full test by being outside in the sun all day. But if any part of my review changes after I continue to wear this during the spring/summer, I will be sure to update this review.
Pros of Kosas Sunscreen
- SPF 40 – I have struggled with finding mineral face sunscreen over SPF 30
- No white cast
- Glowy natural finish
- No pilling underneath makeup and works amazing as a primer
- Lightweight
- Smells amazing
- Once it dries down, it is transfer proof
Cons of Kosas Sunscreen
- Expensive for the amount of product you get – $1/mL
- Takes some extra time to dry down, and with it being tinted during the drying time it can be transferable
- Not waterproof
Summary
Overall, Kosas DreamBeam Sunscreen is very easy to apply and blends seamlessly into the skin, leaving no white cast or residue. With a broad-spectrum SPF of 40, this sunscreen provides effective protection against sun damage and premature aging caused by the sun while leaving your skin looking supple and glowy.
