Old Post Name: 100/100 Yuka Approved Face Sunscreens

Ever since I started using the clean beauty app Yuka, the skincare product I have struggled to find the most is sunscreen, specifically face sunscreens. If you wear sunscreen daily, you know how hard it can be to find the perfect sunscreen for your face. With so many options available on the market, it can be overwhelming to know which one is right for you. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of clean face sunscreens.

Disclaimer: Cowgirly Mood is not associated with Yuka or the Yuka App. We have found the Yuka app to be a great way to incorporate cleaner ingredients into your skincare routine. However, it is not always 100% accurate, so if you are ever hesitant about using a Yuka approved product, we highly recommend reaching out to a professional for guidance and doing your own research. The information provided is not intended as professional or medical advice and cannot be guaranteed to be up-to-date or free of errors. New Yuka app updates and product reformulations can also affect rating changes.

The Yuka App ratings on our website were last checked on the date with the asterisk* below the product box. We cannot guarantee that the product has not been reformulated or that the Yuka App has made any updates to its rating scale past that date.

If any product ratings change during our review process, we will try our best to mark the product on our website with what has changed with the product’s ingredients. After 1 month, if the product is still no longer Yuka approved, it will be removed from our website. It is always recommended for you to do your own research as well.

Notice as of 11/28/23: I have been made aware that the Yuka app is currently flagging “Zinc Oxide” as a “moderate risk” ingredient and dropping some of the overall ratings for these sunscreens. However, as stated on the Yuka app itself “For products applied to the skin, the microparticles, on the other hand, would be too large to penetrate the skin and would not pose a problem.” As Zinc Oxide is one of the main active ingredients in mineral or physical sunscreens besides Titanium Dioxide, I would highly recommend you doing your own research or reaching out to a professional on the ingredients before purchasing, especially when it comes to non-nano Zinc Oxide vs nano Zinc Oxide as Yuka has broken down the classification of the ingredient into “Non-Nano Uncoated Zinc Oxide”. So, if you have visited this blog before and see some products removed this is the reason why.

Mineral Sunscreens with Clean Ingredients + Non-Coated Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Since the Yuka app changed its rating on the ingredient: “Zinc Oxide” for sunscreens, they seemed to have lowered the rating on all the mineral sunscreens across the board, including ones that contain “Non-Coated Non-Nano Zinc Oxide”.

This has resulted in me as of (3/25/24) not being able to find any mineral sunscreens with an “excellent” or “good” Yuka app rating, which can be frustrating, especially as spring and summer approaches.

The ratings seem to change monthly from No Risk: “Non-Coated Non-Nano Zinc Oxide” to Moderate Risk: “Zinc Oxide”.

So, I have compiled a list of sunscreens from my research that still have all Yuka approved ingredients but contain Non-Coated Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, resulting in a current 49/100 Yuka App Rating because the Yuka App rates all Zinc Oxide sunscreens the same no matter if they have Non-Nano Zinc Oxide.

I highly recommend you do your own research on Non-Nano Zinc Oxide sunscreens if you are interested in learning more about it before purchasing and using the sunscreen.

It is also always highly recommended that you reach out to a professional if you are ever hesitant about using a new product or wish to understand more about the specific ingredients. I want to inform you that these mineral sunscreen products are just from my research and for educational purposes only.

I will provide some of my research below as well, to help you with your own research.

I will still mark a notice on the below sunscreens during my routine research if any of the other ingredients besides Non-Coated Non-Nano Zinc Oxide change on the Yuka App, but I will not be keeping up with the overall Yuka app ratings on sunscreens any longer.

What is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide?

Non-nano Zinc Oxide is used in mineral sunscreens as the main active ingredient. It provides broad-spectrum coverage against UVA and UVB rays.

According to Suntribe, “Non Nano means the particles are larger than 100nm which results in the particles not being able to penetrate your skin. It has also been shown to be the safest option for marine life and coral reefs since Zinc Oxide in its Non-Nano form has been shown not to harm marine wildlife.”

According to Badger Balm:

  • “Science overwhelmingly shows that particles of zinc oxide greater than 30nm, when applied to the skin in a lotion or cream-based product, do not get absorbed into the body, do not enter the bloodstream, and are not a threat to human health.”
  • “Zinc oxide, like most powders, can be a health risk if inhaled, but this is not a concern with cream and lotion-based sunscreens.”

I cannot emphasize this enough, this information is for educational purposes only: please do your own research or reach out to a professional if you are hesitant about purchasing mineral sunscreens. This is not medical or professional advice.

What Does Yuka Approved Mean?

When a skincare product is Yuka approved or receives an excellent rating on the Yuka app, it means that the product has met all the necessary criteria for being a safe and healthy choice for the skin. The Yuka app provides a rating score based on its ingredients and potential impact on health.

To receive an excellent rating, or excellent, on the Yuka app, a skincare product must meet several criteria:

  1. The skincare product must not contain any parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances.
  2. The skincare product must contain a high percentage of organic or natural ingredients.

By meeting these specific criteria, a skincare product can then receive the excellent rating on the Yuka app.

Part One of Many Yuka Approved Products Series

I am very excited to start my Yuka approved products series. I know how discouraging it can be to scan through multiple skincare and makeup products and continually come up with disruptive, harmful, or irritant ingredients. The Yuka approved face sunscreens provide a comprehensive and reliable selection of sunscreens for those looking for cleaner ingredients.

With a focus on more natural ingredients, these sunscreens offer a safe and effective alternative to traditional sunscreen options. From lightweight and fast-absorbing formulas to those with added skincare benefits, there is a sunscreen for every skin type and preference.

The Yuka app rating system also provides an added level of transparency and assurance for consumers. It is crucial to conduct a patch test before fully integrating a skincare product into your regimen, as everyone’s skin may have a distinct response to products.
